Religion
In second grade your child prepares for his or her first celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Your child is introduced to Jesus’ forgiveness and peace in the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. Your child will learn about the wonderful gift of the Eucharist, when he or she will receive the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ under the appearances of bread and wine. Finally, your child will learn the meaning of the Mass, its different parts, and how to participate in it.
English Language Arts
In grade two, students will continue to build important reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. They will think, talk, and write about what they read in variety of texts, such as stories, books, articles, and other sources of information. In their writing, students will learn how to develop a topic and strengthen their skills by editing and revising. Students will continue to develop their understanding of the conventions of the English language through grammar lesson. Second graders are introduced to cursive handwriting for the first time!
Mathematics
Students will extend their understanding of place value to the hundreds place. They will use this place value understanding to solve word problems, including those involving length and other units of measure. Students will continue to work on their addition and subtraction skills, quickly and accurately adding and subtracting numbers up through 20 and also working with numbers up through 100. They will build a foundation for understanding fractions by working with shapes and geometry.
Social Studies
Students study their community and learn about characteristics that define urban, suburban and rural communities. Democratic principles and participation in government are introduced. Interaction with the environment and the changes to the environment and their impact are examined. The concept of change over time and examining cause and effect are introduced. Students will examine the availability of resources and the interdependence within and across communities.
Science
Students are expected to develop an understanding of what plants need to grow and how plants depend on animals for seed dispersal and pollination. Your child will explore the diversity of life in different habitats. In second grade, students learn the properties of matter and how natural forces can change the surface of the Earth.
